Mgsr. William Lynn may get House Arrest, Philadelphia Police get $3.1 million COPS grant

Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge M. Teresa Sarmina granted conditional approval to a plan that would place Monsignor William Lynn on house arrest pending sentencing August 13th. He was found guilty of one count of child endangerment. He will remain in prison until July 5th, though, so that his lawyers can answer to what might happen if he were to flea. The prosecution provided a vague newspaper report of several priests having fled court jurisdictions in the past only not to have been brought back to justice, noting that the Vatican does not have an extradition treaty. Lynn said he'd be willing to sign anything the judge requires.

The Philadelphia Police Department will receive $3.1 million from the U.S. Department of Justice to help pay the salary and benefits of 25 new cops. The Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) award requires that the positions be filled by military veterans who have served at least 180 days since 9/11. "Public safety is a top priority for cities all across America," Mayor Nutter said. "COPS grants give our cities the tools they need to keep our citizens safe."

Tonight, Partly Cloudy with Temperatures in the low 70's/upper 60's in Philadelphia.
