Phillies Win on Historic Walkoff by Jim Thome

The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 this afternoon with a pinch-hit walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 9th by Jim Thome. He came off the bench to pinch hit for Jonathan Papelbon, who blew the save with a two run lead in the top of the ninth. Thome has talked about how difficult pinch hitting is, without the regular at bats, but last week's American league road trip helped get him back in stride as the DH. He took the count to 3-2 today before launching a pitch to left field.

Thome's walk-off home run today is the 13th of his career. That is the most in MLB history. He passes Jimmie Foxx, Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, and Frank Robinson in the category. The HR also moves him into a tie with Sammy Sosa at number 7 on the all-time HR list with 609. Thome remains the all-time leader in interleague home runs as well.
