Long Beach Island Beaches Reopen; Rodney King, 47, found dead

Long Beach Island has reopened 9 miles of beaches from Ship Bottom to Barnegat Light today after they were shutdown on Saturday. Trash, debris, eel grass, and medical waste had washed ashore along that stretch. Township employees worked Saturday and early Sunday to clear the beaches and they were reopened this morning at 9:15 am. They'll continue to monitor the situation.

Rodney King was found dead this morning at the bottom of his pool in Rialto, CA. His fiancé, Cynthia Kelley, discovered him at around 5:25 am and called 911. There were no signs of foul play and authorities believe at this time it was a simple drowning. He had apparently been drinking and smoking all day. An autopsy will be performed in the next 48 hours. King was the central figure in the 1992 Los Angeles riots. On March 3, 1991, King was stopped by LAPD after a high speed chase. Officers proceeded hit him with night sticks, kick him, and stun him. It was all caught on video by a bystander. Four officers were put on trial for the incident, and despite the video evidence, three were acquitted with one mistrial on April 29, 1992. Violence erupted immediately in reaction to the verdict in Los Angeles. The riots lasted for 6 days in South Central LA and Koreatown with widespread violence and looting that left 50 dead, 3000 injured, and thousands of businesses destroyed. King was 47.
