PA House Passes Liqour Bill; Black Madam Takes Stand; Woman Attacked in Spring Garden

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has passed a bill to privatize state-run liquor sales for the second time in two years. The Republican-controlled house voted 114-to-87 on the liquor privatization measure. Existing state stores selling wine and liquor would close and licenses would be sold to private retailers (with beer distributors getting first shot) to sell wine, liquor, or both. The sale of wholesale liquor licenses are also expected to be very lucrative. Beer laws would also be amended to allow for distributors to sell less than a case and smaller establishments to sell more than a 12-pack. The bill now goes to the Senate where it's future is uncertain. However, it may all be futile as Governor Wolf favors modernization of the current system.

The "Black Madam," Padge Victoria Windslowe, took the stand today in her own defense. Windslowe is charged with third degree murder in the death of 20-year-old British actress-dancer Claudia Aderotimi after injecting her buttocks with industrial-grade silicone at an airport hotel in 2011. Windslowe claimed that she had no idea that what she was doing was dangerous and had no intentions of harming anyone. She says she was trained by a doctor in Bangkok, Thailand, and another nurse in South America that helped perform her sex change operation in 1994. Windslowe also claims to have performed the procedure on thousands of people, including herself, without negative consequences. If convicted, she faces 20-40 years in prison.

A woman was attacked in broad daylight Thursday afternoon by a group of teenagers in the Spring Garden section. It happened around 2:30 pm on the 1800 block of North Street. The woman was knocked to the ground, robbed, and sprayed in the face with mace. Investigators believe that this group of teens is responsible for at least six similar attacks in the neighborhood this month. Video of the group was released earlier this week after they attacked and robbed a 13-year-old boy. This is the first attack they used mace. Usually they ambush their victim, knock them to the ground and take iPhones and other valuables. Anyone with information should call Philadelphia Police at 215-546-TIPS.
