Don Tollefson Found Guilty; Grand Jury Charges for Kane; Ken Trujillo Leaves Mayor's Race

A jury in Bucks County found former Philadelphia sportscaster Don Tollefson guilty on all counts today in his theft and fraud case. 62-year-old Tollefson was charged with taking more than $340,000 from 200 people for sports and travel packages that he never delivered and on the other end depriving charities of their fundraising. Tollefson represented himself in the trial. He contended that he was simply a bad bookkeeper and businessman and tried to make good when the money ran out. The prosecution showed that he used the money for his own personal expenses. Tollefson was offered a plea deal which he accepted and then rejected in favor of trial. That would have included a 2 year sentence including 6 months of jail and intensive addiction treatment. He now faces 30 years in prison. Tollefson was taken into custody in lieu of 10% of $350,000 bail.

Court documents released today shows that a Pennsylvania grand jury investigating Attorney General Kathleen Kane recommended charges against her for perjury and obstruction. The grand jury was investigating allegations that Kane leaked confidential documents from a 2009 grand jury. Instead of charges related to the leak investigation, the jury found grounds to charge her with perjury, false swearing, official oppression, and obstruction. Kane reacted today insisting that she has done nothing wrong and told the jury the truth. She had moved to have these documents unsealed by the PA Supreme Court in addition to petitioning that special prosecutor Thomas Carluccio be removed from the case. Kane, a democrat, believes this is just an attempt by her political opposition to use the court system to “overturn an election of somebody they just don't like.” Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman now has the decision whether to indict Kane on these charges.

Former city solicitor Kenneth Trujillo announced today that he was removing himself from the 2015 Philadelphia mayoral race. Trujillo cited “family matters that require my full attention” as his reason for no longer seeking the Democratic nomination. Trujillo joins Terry Gillen who both entered and left the race so far. There are now three announced candidates for the office: former District Attorney Lynne Abraham, State Sen. Anthony Williams, and former city solicitor Nelson Diaz. Former Nutter administration spokesman Doug Oliver and Milton Street are expected to announce their candidacies next month.
