Slight chance of Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights, in Philadelphia on Friday 9/12/14

A large solar storm is predicted to hit the Earth on Friday potentially causing disruption to satellites, radio, and other transmissions but also causing some spectacular views of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. The direction and strength of solar flare could mean the lights will be visible in some far south latitudes, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The lights occur when radiation from the sun interacts with charged particles in our atmosphere.

If you are hoping to view the Northern Lights in Philadelphia, there is a chance on Friday night, but the conditions may not be ideal. The moon is still bright, in a waning gibbous phase. There could also be partly cloudy conditions. The best place to view the Aurora Borealis is in any open area away from the city lights. Viewing is typically better after midnight but it is possible to see them anytime after the sun goes down. Remember to bring a camera.

UPDATE 3/17/15: Philadelphia has Rare Chance at St. Patrick's Northern Lights; Aurora Borealis in Philly?
