Philadelphia Police Officer Jonathan Garcia Arrested on Drug Charges, Could Face More.

Yesterday, 23-year-old Philadelphia police officer Jonathan Garcia was charged with selling heroin to a confidential informant working for the FBI. Garcia, a three year vet stationed at the 17th District in South Philly, was charged with four counts of distribution of heroin and two counts of carrying a firearm during drug trafficking. In two separate incidents Garcia sold or attempted to sell a couple of bundles of heroin to or through the CI. He has plead not-guilty to those charges and has bail hearing on Friday.

That, however, does not seem to be the extent of Garcia's exploitation of the badge. Federal prosecutors said in a court filing today that they'll be adding to Garcia's rap sheet including robbery and gun charges.

The one specific instance in the filing just happened on June 19th and followed a pattern that Garcia has allegedly been abusing over and over the past 1 1/2 years. The confidential informant, who Garcia believed was a regular drug dealer, told him he knew of someone selling OxyContin. Garcia told him to go buy three pills and leave two out on the floor of the car. This way Garcia can come along and pull them over, see the pills and search the car. The seller, however, was also a FBI informant and the car was stocked with an exact number of pills and marked cash. When Garcia brought in his arrest and logged in evidence from his search, it was significantly less than what was known to the FBI to be in the car.

The CI told the FBI that Garcia has done this numerous times over the years, using him to setup drug dealers so he could pull them over and illegally search their cars.

Garcia has already been suspended 30 days with the intent to dismiss. All of these crimes together could bring a minimum of 30 years in federal prison.
