Union Transfer set to join legendary Philly venues

After months and months of work and deals being worked out and locations scouted, it's finally a done deal. At 1026 Spring Garden St, most recently the site of the old Spaghetti Warehouse on the north edge of Center City, 'Union Transfer ' has officially been announced, with a month of shows starting this fall booked and ready to be played.

For the Pennsylvania casinos, table games are where the money is. Estimates for June are still being tallied, and table games have already raked in almost a half a billion dollars across the state.
Slot machines are still where the big money is. Slots gambling is on schedule to make well over $2.3 billion this year, with more than $790 million in tax revenue.

The Philadelphia school district still facing a $600 million dollar budget gap has many wondering about the 18 day district wide summer school program, which costs $18 million dollars.

Some classrooms have had full attendance, while others, have had minimal to no students showing up. Teachers are sitting in empty classrooms with nothing to do and being paid.

Most of the $18 million pays for teacher salaries for the 18 days.

The Phillies head into the All Star break with the best record in baseball. Five Phillies were named All Stars, but it appears Polanco and Victorino will pass and use the time to recover from injuries. House Majority Leader Mike Turzai hopes to proclaim The Liquor Control Board is dead.

Turzai is ready to unveil a bill to replace the state liquor system, which has been in place since the 1930's, with private enterprise.

The plan is drawing criticism from Democrats and unionists who say the current system works and provides a steady stream of state revenue.

Phillies Shane Victorino Wins All Star Final Vote but Heads to DL

Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino won the National League All Star Final Vote yesterday. This is the second time Shane has been named to the All Star team through the Final Vote, the first was in 2009.

However, he won't be playing in this year's game because he was he was placed on the 15 day disabled list retroactive to Monday with a ligament sprain in his right thumb.

NJ State Police Steroid Tests Coming

The NJ state's drug testing policy for police will be changed to allow, but not require, police departments to test officers for steroids, leaving police chiefs with the decision of whether to perform drug tests.

Under the current policy, steroids are not on the list of drugs that can be tested….and these tests cost the state money.

Philadelphia Tax Deadbeats Made Known

The city of Philaldelphia yesterday continued its quest to publicly shame tax deadbeats as the Revenue Department showcased its latest list of 38 delinquent bums that owe a combined $5.5 million.

Philadelphia's top-three tax deadbeats, according to the city, include Workforce Culture Connections, Keystone Administrative Services and the Baker Funeral Home. Each owes more than $400,000.
