Villanova University: More Dorms, Less Community Friction

Villanova University has launched a $200-million-plus building project that will transform two parking lots on Lancaster Avenue into a Gothic "gateway" to campus and include two residence halls, a parking garage, and a performing-arts center.

The chief goal of the plan is to create more on-campus housing for students, many of whom live in surrounding Main Line towns and often annoy residents with their antics.

Rising Concussion Rate Leads Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital To Expand

Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital in Malvern is spending $1-million on an expansion program and one part of that is more space and new facilities for its outpatient center for brain injuries and other neurological disorders.

In the past year, the number of patients suffering post concussion symptoms has increased 35 percent, with ages ranging from people as young as 11 and up to their 70’s.

William DeWeese Found Guilty

A once-powerful Pennsylvania House speaker was found guilty this week of corruption and related charges.

William DeWeese was Democratic leader of the state House when he was accused of using public resources, mainly staff, for campaign purposes. He is still a sitting member of the House.

DeWeese’s lawyer vowed to appeal the verdict, and DeWeese said he would seek re-election. He would be required to give up his House seat upon sentencing.

The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has drawn criticism from both sides of the Pro-Life Pro-Choice debate. Komen had decided to drop support for Planned Parenthood's breast cancer screening efforts. After outrage from legions from the Pro-Choice side, Komen reversed its decision. The reversal is drawing sharp criticism from the Pro-Life antiabortion side for caving to the pressure.

Apparently the Washington Nationals would rather see empty seats than Phillies fans in the seats of their ballpark. Forget You, Philly is the new cry from the Nationals top brass. They've named the campaign, "Take Back the Park." Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair to "see" his shadow on Thursday, in the process predicting six more weeks of winter.

The groundhog made his "prediction" on Gobbler's Knob, a tiny hill in the town for which he's named about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

A delegation from Chester delivered petitions to Governor Tom Corbett's office seeking state funds to keep the Chester-Upland schools open.

Four women and a child went to the governor's office carrying a petition they say contains almost 2,500 signatures seeking to keep the Chester-Upland School District open.
