Wawa Day Means Free Coffee, Kensington Hit and Run Child Dies, Market East Redesign

April 16th is now known as Wawa Day in Philadelphia, marking the day that the company's first convenience store opened. Wawa anticipates giving away more than 1.5-million cups of free coffee today to all customers chain-wide. Also, at an event today with Mayor Michael Nutter, the company will unveil plans for the new Center City location at Broad and Walnut Streets.

A Montgomery County drug task force has arrested two people and seized one kilogram of heroin in a drug bust in Norristown this week. Detectives intercepted a conversation between a Philadelphia area man and a Mexican drug trafficker about the purchase of kilogram amounts of heroin. The Mexican man set up a deal between the Philadelphia area man and Gladiz Basurto-Leal of Norristown. Those two then met in King of Prussia and Basurto-Leal bought the kilo. New Jersey governor Chris Christie has proposed a $1 trillion overhaul of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. The governor called for reduced Social Security benefits for seniors earning more than $80,000, and ending payments entirely for those making $200,000 or more, as well as an increase in the retirement age from 67 to 69.

Fast food workers in Philadelphia are planning to walk off the job today. The workers scheduled the walk-off for Wednesday to rally for higher wages and the right to unionize. Organizers say today's rally will be their biggest yet, with other "underpaid workers" joining them across the country. Philadelphia's newest state representative - who becomes the second of only two Republicans to represent the city in the state House - took the oath of office Monday. Republican Martina White was sworn in as the newest member, having won a special election for the Northeast Philadelphia seat formerly held by Democrat Brendan Boyle, who was elected to Congress. White's win gives the GOP a 120 to 83 edge in the state House.

Three portable generator trucks have arrived at the former Revel hotel-casino in Atlantic City which was bought last week by Florida developer Glenn Straub. Straub says that the two main units and one backup should be operational in two days. The $2.4 billion building has been dark since last Thursday when ACR Energy Partners cut power and water to it's only client. Officials announced Monday that the reward for information in the case of the kidnapping and beating of a jewelry store employee early this month has risen to $20,000. This comes after one suspect, 31-year-old Khayree Gay, was arrested last Friday in South Carolina. Gay faces federal kidnapping and robbery charges. He waived his extradition to Philadelphia today. The Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival was a big success yesterday. According to organizers 40,000 people came out to chow down on the offerings of 50 different food trucks and other vendors along Main Street.
