Philadelphia Police are investigating after 5 people were shot and injured during a large block party in North Philadelphia on Saturday night, 8/15. It happened around 10:30 p.m. at the intersection of 10th and Brown Streets. Police were already responding around the block to the area of 9th and Parish Streets for the reports of a large block party. There were around 200 young people gathered. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced on Friday, 8/14, that New Jersey will conduct the November 3rd general election mostly through the mail. All registered voters will receive a prepaid return-postage ballot in the mail. Ballots can be returned by mail as long as they are postmarked November 3 and are received by November 10. A South Philadelphia woman has been charged in the death of a teenager whose decomposing body was found in her home earlier this year. 26-year-old Maddison Leidy has been charged with drug delivery resulting in death. She was previously arrested and charged with abuse of corpse, obstruction, and other counts. She was arrested in January 2020 when police went to her home to arrest her on a probation violation. The 59th Annual Philadelphia Folk Fest is going Virtual due to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic. The oldest continuously run outdoor music festival in North America will be held entirely online this weekend August 13-16. Passes are available either for the entire weekend or single day tickets. The Christopher Columbus statue at Marconi Plaza on South Broad Street in South Philadelphia will be removed and placed in storage. The Philadelphia Art Commission met on Wednesday, 8/12, and voted 8-1 in favor of removal. The Philadelphia Historical Commission met last month and voted 10-2 in favor of removal. Each August as the Earth's annual orbit takes it through the remains of the comet Swift-Tuttle/109P, we are treated to a dramatic show of meteors streaking through the sky called the Perseids. Named because they seem to radiate from the constellation Perseus, this meteor shower will peak tonight Tuesday August 11th through Wednesday August 12th. It is not uncommon to see up to 60 meteors an hour with the Perseids.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Office of Catholic Education has released a video that previews how the hybrid A/B learning model will work in Archdiocesan high schools for the 2020-21 academic year. All 17 high schools will be returning to school this fall using the hybrid model. The school population will be split in half, with each group attending in person either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday.
