Philadelphia Sheriff's Department officials say that the sergeant injured in an elevator failure last week at the courthouse is paralyzed from the waist down. 48-year-old Sergeant Paul Owens remains in critical condition and is in an induced coma. On Thursday, Owens was riding in an employee elevator at the Criminal Justice Center when it malfunctioned and crashed through the ceiling of the shaft and into a maintenance room. He suffered broken bones in his back and underwent surgery at the hospital. The CJC reopened on Monday after safety inspections over the weekend of all elevators. The two affected employee elevators will remain shut down while the Sheriff's Department figures out how to move judges, jurors, defendants, and inmates through the building.

A Berks County family of five was discovered on Sunday shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide. They have been identified as 33-year-old Megan Short and her husband 40-year-old Mark Short, and their three children, Liana, 8, Mark, 5, and 2-year-old Willow. Police went to their home on Winding Brook Drive in the Brookfield Manor development in Sinking Spring, PA, after family members said they didn't show up for lunch on Saturday. Police discovered them all in the living along with the dog who was also shot. There was a note and handgun on the floor. Police have not said who pulled the trigger or what the note said. The couple apparently was having relationship struggles. They were also featured in several news stories last year about their daughter Willow who had a heart transplant at just a few days old and was having difficulty getting medication.

A 23-year-old Ukrainian man who lied about his name and age while attending a Pennsylvania high school for four years pled guilty today. Artur Samarin is accused of a number of fraud charges and as well as having sex with an underage girl. Going by the name of Asher Potts, he enrolled in John Harris High School near Harrisburg after his visa expired 4 years ago. Samarin attended the high school for nearly the full 4 years until he was caught this past winter just months before graduation. He was an honors student, and highly involved in activities. During his fraudulent high school career, he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl. He was a 'sophomore' at the time, but in reality 22-years-old. Once his true age was discovered, she came forward. He faces up to 40 years in prison, plus $90,000 in fines. Sentencing is in September.
