NJ Minimum Wage Increase, North Philadelphia 4 Year Old Shot Dead, Wilmington Indicts Four in Death

New Jersey lawmakers on Thursday passed legislation that would raise the state's minimum wage to $10.10 in the next year and to at least $15 over the next five years. The legislation now goes to Republican Gov. Chris Christie, who has been critical of the proposal and said it would cost businesses and residents in the form of higher costs. If it were enacted, New Jersey would become the third state on a direct path toward a $15 an hour minimum wage, the highest in the nation. New York and California have enacted similar measures.

Philadelphia Police say a 4-year-old girl is dead after a shooting in North Philadelphia Thursday afternoon. The little girl was shot in the eye and pronounced dead a half an hour after police received the call. It happened inside a home near the intersection of West Montgomery Avenue and North 20th Street, around 12:30. Police have recovered the weapon. The girl’s 25-year-old mother and 3-year-old sister were at the scene at the time of the shooting. No arrests have been made as police continue their investigation.

A Delaware grand jury indicted three men and a woman in connection with the murder of a Wilmington high school student. 15-year-old Brandon Wingo was shot as he walked home from school on May 19th on the 900 block of Clifford Brown Walk. Prosecutors say Kevon Harris-Dickerson, Zaahir Smith, and Diamonte Taylor were gang members, and Brandon’s killing was an act of gang violence. A Wilmington woman Latasha Pierce was indicted on weapons and conspiracy charges.
