Woman Shot Waiting for Bus Tuesday; Central Bucks Counselor Fired For FB Post

Philadelphia Police are looking for the murderer who shot a woman waiting for the bus Tuesday morning. It happened around 9:30 am at 12th and Jefferson near Temple University in North Philadelphia. 56-year-old Kim Jones (pictured) was shot in the back of the head as she was waiting to board the #23 SEPTA bus. Jones is a child advocate and works as a program director for Turning Points for Children in Center City. Police believe that Jones was targeted but do not know by whom or why, but someone who knew her routine. It was definitely not a robbery; the shooter left her purse, cellphone, and jewelry. The suspect is described as a heavy-set black male wearing dark clothing and carrying a duffel bag. Investigators are going over surveillance cameras in the area. There is a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The Central Bucks School Board decided to fire a guidance counselor who posted a controversial message on Facebook last month. The school district headquarters was full for the meeting on Monday night with many parents and students who wanted to voice their support for 37-year-old Marykate Blankenburg of Upper Gwynedd. (see picture below) Blackenburg was suspended following the social media post. On December 7, 2014 prior to the Philadelphia Eagles vs. Seattle Seahawks game and in reference to a planned 'die-in' protest at Broad and Pattison following the game, she posted "If my child cannot get to the Eagles game to due protesters, I will personally SHOOT every one of them. You've been warned idiots." Hers was just one of a number of similar social media posts on Facebook and Twitter that were prevalent that night, but Blackenburg's in particular stood out. The Montgomery County DA investigated last month and declined to press charges saying, “while the posting was inappropriate and ill-advised, it was not made with the level of intent necessary to make the posting criminal in nature." Despite the calls from students and parents to allow Blackenburg to remain a counselor at Central Bucks, the board voted all in favor with one opposed to her firing.

No Charges for Social Media Threat
