New Year's Eve Gun Celebrations; Late Week Storm and Cold; New Year Countdown on iradiophilly

Philadelphia's top law enforcements officials including Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and District Attorney Seth Williams were joined by gun shot victim, Joe Jaskolka, at a press conference today discussing the dangers of using guns to celebrate on New Years Eve. Ramsey reminded us that shooting a gun in the air is dangerous at best and potentially deadly. The laws of gravity still apply to bullets; they go up and eventually and unpredictably come down. Jaskolka recalled walking in South Philadelphia at 11-years-old on December 31, 1998. He was struck in the head by a random bullet and has been paralyzed on his right side since. DA Williams notes that on a typical night there are around 10 reports of gunfire, but on NYE it can be tens times that. Firing a gun tonight could result in charges including recklessly endangering another person, and/or aggravated assault, attempted murder, or even murder just for a stupid act.

The New Year is going to bring an Arctic blast and snow by the end of the week. Current models are suggesting that the winter storm is forecast to head into our area late on Thursday and into Friday. It won't be a major storm as suggested earlier, but it will be a bit of a nuisance. The Philadelphia area could see 2-5 inches of snow through Friday afternoon. That's when the deep freeze will settle in. Friday's high is expected to be only 20 with a low of 9, Saturday for the Eagles game will struggle to get out of the 20's as well.

Ring in the New Year with iradiophilly! Listen to the countdown on ANY iradiophilly station tonight just before midnight.
