Philadelphia loves local. The ever-growing tightly-knit community of musicians, bands, artists and like-minded music aficionados continually support and thrive in Philly's native and lively Do-It-Yourself scene. With shows and art events happening weekly, even daily, there is never a stagnant night for music and the creative visionary cohorts within the city. DIYPHL, an organization doing a stellar job promoting underground shows and art events celebrates their one year anniversary this month. Each month a different artist illustrates a unique calendar showcasing upcoming show dates from local favorite bands, new sounds, and the "unconventional" venue such as houses, art galleries, and coffeehouses hosting the event. Mainly supported by their online website (DIYPHL.COM), DIYPHL has Twitter and Tumblr accounts providing information and news regarding underground shows and happenings, making events accessible and reliable than ever for live-music seeking individuals. Additional to the online promotions, DIYPHL prints fliers and calendars spread throughout the city, obtainable in select coffee shops.

Prepared to celebrate the one year anniversary DIYPHL has published a 60-page anthology of photos spanning from underground shows and events held within Philadelphia, year: 2012. This "yearbook" if you will, highlights some of the most visceral bands and concert-goers characteristic of Philly’s burgeoning music scene. Entitled "PHL 2012: A Year of DIY" photographs have been submitted from a myriad of photographers, professional and enthusiast. With over 72 spaces putting on independent shows within the city, not including bars or legitimate performance venues, there is rarely a date without a show listing. Featured within the photo book is a broad look at the variety of house venues and prominent bands hailing from Philadelphia.

The “PHL 2012: A Year of DIY” photo book will be making its publication debut at “The First Annual Galentine’s Cover Band Show” this Saturday, February 16th at 7 P.M. at South Philadelphia art studio & music venue “Cha-Cha Razzi”. A handful of bands will be playing cover sets from the likes of The Breeders, Bikini Kill, B-52s, and Parliament Funkadelic. The event is also a fundraiser for Ladyfest, an arts and activism music festival being held this summer.

Additionally in local music news, today the cute and cuddly Philadelphia based indie-pop outfit Catnaps premiered their snowball prom-themed music video for the track “Novelty” from their recently released Shuteye EP. Check it out! Ideal with Valentine’s Day approaching. Catnaps’ Shuteye EP is available for download on BandCamp.
