Council President Darrell Clarke is holding off on introducing a pension reform bill that Mayor Nutter wants to see passed. One key issue is how it would affect the pensions of future elected officials. The plan primarily affects some non-unionized city workers, imposing a new, hybrid pension plan for new hires. But Nutter included provisions for other groups, including a small number of unionized workers and elected officials. Current elected officials would be grandfathered into the existing pension plan.

Temple University will host a conference Tuesday on one of the main drivers of future economic growth; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), There’s a common push on employment and education, so that firms with jobs to fill have skilled people to fill them, and those with the skills can get jobs. Temple is at the center of a STEM education push that goes from Kindergarten until sophomore year in college, when interest in STEM careers wanes, perhaps because of the math-heavy curriculum.

A homeless man has been arrested in connection with a three-alarm fire early Sunday morning in Gloucester City that drove several families out of their homes. 26-year-old Tito Diaz was arrested and charged with defiant trespass and recklessly causing widespread damage. The fire broke out inside a three story vacant twin home along the 400 block of Market Street. Diaz, who’s been squatting in the house where the fire started, raised the alarm. Officials confirmed the cause of the fire was careless smoking. No injuries were reported.
