America For Jesus in Philly; Ryan Howard Out for Season; Outdoor Feeding of Homeless Agreement

A crowd of almost 10,000 gathered on Independence Mall today during the two day “America For Jesus” rally, a national prayer gathering. Televangelist Pat Robertson, founder of the 700 Club, addressed the crowd and led them in prayer. The event was organized by One Nation under God, a non-partisan coalition of ministries. They aim to reclaim the nation for God and the Christian right because the country is spiritually sick as a whole. They are asking for 40 days of prayer leading up to the November elections. Today began with music and song from Christian bands and singing groups followed by speakers. The program lasted from 9am to 5pm.

Ryan Howard is out for the season. Well it's only 5 more games, but it just adds insult to the injury of this entire season. Howard, of course, spent half the season on the disabled list because he popped his Achilles' tendon in the last at-bat of last year. What did he do now? Well, you ever see him in the on-deck circle warming up by swinging that pipe around that he tosses about like a Wiffle bat? Ever wonder how much it weighs or what it's made of? It's a lead pipe and it's heavy! Howard dropped it on his big toe on Thursday. X-rays show a hair line fracture. It should heal on its own quickly, but he just can't play out the season.

Mayor Michael Nutter and religious groups have reached a compromise over the outdoor feeding of the homeless. The city agreed to suspend the ban and drop the appeal of the injunction against the policy. The groups put a hold on its federal complaint that the ban violated the free exercise of religious beliefs. As part of the agreement, the two sides are required to work together to find better ways to distribute food and provide services to the homeless. Time will tell whether this collaboration leads to indoor spaces available for food distribution with other services located at the same place, or if the groups will just continue to bring food to where the homeless are (specifically outside, along the Ben Franklin Parkway). Either way the needy will not go hungry, especially as the weather gets cooler.
