School District Blue Collar Protest, Washer Boy Update (video), 5 Year Minimum For Felons W/ Guns

Around 2,000 blue collar workers of the Philadelphia School District created a noisy, traffic blocking protest in Center City during mid-day today. The drivers and maintenance workers were rallying against impending school budget cuts and layoffs. 14 arrests were made when union members blocked traffic at Broad and Race, included SEIU Local 32BJ Union Pres. George Ricchezza. More than 2,000 members of Local 32BJ have received layoff notices from the school district.

Authorities have located the mother of the boy who got locked in a laundromat washing machine in Camden. Video of the incident (see below) has gained wide attention. It happened at Federal Laundromat, showing a man the boy playing around, when the man places the boy in the washer and closes door. The machine started automatically and couldn't be opened, until a worker was able to cut the power. It turns out the boy was with his babysitter and her boyfriend (not his father). Authorities do not feel there was any mal intent, and charges are unlikely to be filed.

Pennsylvania State Legislature has passed a bill today mandating a minimum five-year prison term for any felon caught with an illegal gun. The bill passed the House, 190-7. It will now move to the Senate. PA already mandated 5 year minimum terms for convicts who commit crimes while armed, however, this new bill will require the 5 year penalty just for being armed, with no other crime. Felons in Pennsylvania are already not allowed to arm themselves but the penalty is usually just a parole violation.

Mostly Cloudy with scattered thunderstorms this evening, temperatures around 70 in Philadelphia.
