One firefighter was killed and 5 others were injured after a building collapsed during a fire in the city's Fairhill section early Saturday morning, 6/18. It started around 2 a.m. on the 300 block of West Indiana Avenue near North 3rd Street. The 3-story building housed a pizzeria and residences. The collapse happened after the fire was put out. It happened at 3:24 a.m. The unnamed 27-year veteran was killed. Four other firefighters and an inspector for L+I were injured. They were taken to Temple University Hospital and are expected to be ok. The cause of the fire and the collapse are under investigation.
UPDATE: 51-year-old Lieutenant Sean Williamson has been identified as the firefighter killed in the collapse. He was a 27-year veteran of the department.
Update: PFD continued work to rescue 2 trapped members from the collapse at 300 W. Indiana St. 1 member was transported to the hospital. The other, a 27-year veteran, was pronounced at the scene. Our thoughts are with his friends, family, and fellow PFD along with all affected.

Authorities in Montgomery County have arrested a man they believe is connected to a series of similar attacks in Philadelphia the past fews days. Whitpain Township police took Malcolm White of Brooklyn, New York into custody after an assault on a woman Thursday morning. He is charged with aggravated assault and other related crimes and is being held in Montgomery County Jail. The attacks in Philadelphia started Wednesday night. A group of three women were randomly assaulted on the 1200 block of Morris Street shortly after 11 p.m. on Wednesday night while walking down the street. That incident was caught on video. Shortly after, aon the 1900 block of South 13th Street, a woman sitting on her door step was hit by a man. On Thursday in Roxborough, a man with similar description sexually assaulted a woman in her place of business. Philadelphia Police are working on gathering evidence. The investigations are ongoing.
Philadelphia plans to open 50 of its 63 pools this summer or about 80% starting Tuesday, June 21. Last year, they opened 70% of pools. The Parks and Recreation Department ran an aggressive recruitment campaign to hire and train lifeguards, offering higher pay and benefits, but were still not able to fill all the spots. It still was able to hire 500 workers despite a nationwide shortage of lifeguards. Twenty-six pools will be open by July 4 and the remaining 24 will be open on a rolling basis between July 4 and 15.
