Man Shot in Wawa Over Social Distancing; Mass Assault May Be Federal Crime; Philly Backpack Giveaway

Philadelphia Police are investigating after an off-duty security guard was shot at a Wawa during an altercation about social distancing in the store. It happened around 4:45 a.m. Friday, 8/28, on the 1300 block East Erie Avenue in the Juniata section. It started when an on-duty Wawa security guard told the suspect he could not yet enter the store because it was at capacity. That turned into an argument. The 25-year-old off-duty security guard, who doesn't work at Wawa, happened to be a customer in the store and stepped in to help. The altercation spilled out into the vestibule area. That's when the suspect shot the man once in the chest and fled. The man was taken to Temple University Hospital in critical condition. No arrests have been made.

U.S. Attorney William McSwain is investigating whether an attack on a woman during Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul on Sunday, 8/23, is a federal crime. "This attack during Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul is potentially a federal crime," tweeted McSwain Friday. "Thus, my Office is investigating it. No decision has yet been made about potential charging." It happened during the 11 a.m. Mass. 40-year-old lector Sarah Contrucci was walking off the alter after a reading when she was suddenly hit twice in the face by a female assailant. Philadelphia Police did track down the woman and brought her into custody. She was not immediately charged. Contrucci did not require medical attention. The Mass was being streamed live by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia so the incident was captured on video.

The School District of Philadelphia's annual free backpack giveaway was held on Friday morning, 8/28. This year, it was held as a drive-thru outside of Lincoln Financial Field in South Philadelphia to accommodate social distancing. A long line of cars snaked its way around the sports complex and back onto I-95. Despite students starting classes virtually next Wednesday, 9/2, the bags full of school supplies and Converse sneakers are welcome. The district handed out around 7,000 bags. Every child in a vehicle received one. A lone adult could get two. There will be two more locations for in-person giveaways on Monday, 8/31, at Shoprites in North Philadelphia and Southwest Philadelphia. You have to register beforehand. These are also walk-up locations.

Sports
The Philadelphia Phillies will resume play on Friday, 8/28, vs. the first-place Atlanta Braves. The game is at 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies players decided not to play on Thursday at Washington. Today is Jackie Robinson Day throughout Major League Baseball. It is usually celebrated on April 15.

The NHL announced that the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders Round 2 Game 3 has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, 8/29. The series is tied 1-1. They also decided not to play on Thursday in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, WI.
